Information

LLLC, EPIMORFOSIS intends to organize a Sensory Integration seminar for children – Sensory Integration (S.I.) paediatrics MODULE 1 with professor Dimitrios Mylonadis.


The seminar lasts 4 days and will be held in Athens.


The cost of the seminar is 530.


In order to finalize your registration and ensure a placement to this seminar, a down payment of 230€ must be deposited.


The remaining amount of 300 must be deposited at least 2 days before the start of the seminar.


What is sensory integration?


Sensory experiences include touch, movement, body position, sight, smell, taste, sound, and gravity. The process by which the brain organizes and interprets the various information / stimuli is called sensory integration. Sensory integration is the essential basis for the further development of learning functions and normal behavior.
For most children, sensory integration develops in the process of normal childhood activities.


In some children, sensory integration does not develop as effectively as it should. This is known as sensory processing disorder (SPD). When this process is disrupted then learning problems, motor and behavioral problems can occur.
The idea and theory of sensory integration came from Dr. A. Jean Ayres, PhD, OTR, an occupational therapist from California, USA.


As an occupational therapist, Dr. Ayres showed interest in how sensory process and motor design disorders are involved in learning and daily activities. This theory was developed and clarified by the researcher Dr. Ayres, as well as by other experts.


In addition, the literature in the fields of neuropsychology, neurology, physiology, child development, psychology, and the conduct of basic and applied research studies has contributed to the development of theory and intervention strategies.


Some SPD / DSI findings:
– Physical awkwardness
– Difficulty learning new moves
– The level of activity is unusually high or low
– Physical ignorance
– Improper reaction to contact, movements, images or sounds
– Low self-esteem
– Social and / or emotional difficulties


In addition there may be:
– Attention disorder, impulsivity, lack of attention control.
– Delay in speech, language and / or motor skills.
– Special learning difficulties and / or perception difficulties
– Lack of self-care skills.



An important step in promoting sensory integration in children is to recognize that it exists and that it plays a vital role in their development. Research to date has identified the main diagnostic categories associated with SPD
– Invasive Developmental Disorder (including Autism and Aspergers Syndrome)
– Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (A.D.H.D./A.D.D.)
– Learning disabilities (special learning difficulties, eg dyslexia)
– Developmental Disabilities
– Fragile X Syndrome
– Developmental coordination disorders [DCD]


What can we do?


If a child is suspected of having SPD /, then he / she should be evaluated by an occupational therapist, physiotherapist or speech therapist, who should be trained in sensory integration.
Assessments usually consist of standardized tests that examine posture, balance, coordination, and reactions in the sensory environment.
After careful analysis of the results and information of the evaluation by the parents and other specialists, the therapist will make suggestions regarding the treatment and will define the profile of the sensory process of the child’s abilities, whether the child has SPD or not.
An important factor in the treatment that uses the sensory integration approach is that the child’s motivation plays an important role in the choice of activities.
Most children tend to look for activities that are beneficial to them at this point in their development. It is this active involvement and exploration that makes the child more mature and able to organize sensory information.
Specific skills training is not usually the focus of this therapeutic approach. When using the model of sensory integration, the goal of therapy is to manage the underlying problems, not to teach a particular activity.



Sensory integration 1 – Theory and Therapeutic Intervention


The seminar contains the theory of Sensory Integration, the evaluation in terms of Sensory Integration and the principles of treatment using Sensory Integration techniques. The lectures cover the structures of the sensory systems, neurology and function. Sensory classification / identification in practice will be analyzed based on the theory of Sensory Integration.
Educational videos are used to better understand the theory, evaluation and treatment.


Participants can report cases of their patients for discussion.
Upon completion of the seminar, participants will be able to:


– Examine the principles of Sensory integration in the context of theory, evaluation and therapeutic intervention.
– Examine their structures and functions through the nervous system, which affects the sensory process.
– Analyze the types of sensory process dysfunctions, the associated characteristics / behaviors and select the appropriate intervention strategies.
– Evaluate the clinical findings of Sensory Integration.

Terms of Participation

1. A certificate of attendance, a degree or a diploma will be issued.
2. Printed handouts are provided (notes or relevant book).
3. In case of cancellation of the seminar due to EPIMORFOSIS’s responsibility, deposited fees will be refunded immediately.
4. EPIMORFOSIS reserves the right to change the date or postopone  seminars, informing participants by phone and / or sms & e-mail. In such a  case participants are entitled to request full refund of their fees if they do not wish to attend the seminar on the new date or to use this amount for their participation in other seminars or services of the company.
5. In the event of a strike, government’s bans, heavy bad weather, and generally any event beyond the reasonable control of the organisers  which impedes the execution of part or all of the seminar, the organizers reserve the right to change the date and time of the event. In this case the fees are not refundable but are valid as they are.
6. Cancellation of participation due to participant’s responsibility is possible only by email, as follows:
• up to 30 days prior to the start of the seminar, all deposits are refundable.
• up to 15 days prior to the start of the seminar, 50% is refundable.
• no refund after this deadline, exceptions could be only by decision of EPIMORFOSIS.
