Introduction on Osteopathy

Osteopathy was developed by Andrew Taylor Still, a physician and surgeon in the United States of America in the mid-1800s, who established the first independent school of osteopathy in 1892.Osteopathy (also called osteopathic medicine) relies on manual contact for diagnosis and treatment. It respects the relationship of body, mind and spirit in health and disease; it lays emphasis on the structural and functional integrity of the body and the body’s intrinsic tendency for self-healing.

Osteopathic practitioners use a wide variety of therapeutic manual techniques to improve physiological function and/or support homeostasis that has been altered by somatic (body framework) dysfunction, i.e. impaired or altered function of related components of the somatic system; skeletal, arthrodial and myofascial structures and related vascular, lymphatic, and neural elements. Osteopathic practitioners use their understanding of the relationship between structure and function to optimize the body’s self-regulating, self-healing capabilities. This holistic approach to patient care and healing is based on the concept that a human being is a dynamic functional unit, in which all parts are interrelated and which possesses its own self-regulatory and self-healing mechanisms.

One essential component of osteopathic health care is osteopathic manual therapy, typically called osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT), which refers to an array of manipulative techniques that may be combined with other treatments or advice, for example on diet, physical activity and posture, or counselling. The practice of osteopathy is distinct from other health-care professions that utilize manual techniques, such as physiotherapy or chiropractic, despite some overlap in the techniques and interventions employed.

As a hands-on approach to patient care, osteopathy has contributed to the body of knowledge of manual therapies and complementary and alternative medicine.
Osteopathy is practised in many countries throughout the world.
In some countries, manual therapists use osteopathic techniques and claim to provide osteopathic treatment, although they may not have received proper training.

The German School of Osteopathy (Osteopathie Schule Deutschland OSD)

OSD was founded in 1999 by the German osteopath Torsten Liem DO.
Initially offering a part-time course in Hamburg and Stuttgart, open to medical doctors, physiotherapists and naturopaths (German Heilpraktiker), the school expanded rapidly.

The mission of the school was from the very beginning to offer high academic standards in its educational programs.
In 2003 the first cooperation with the University of Wales was established. This allowed to school to change its part time course into a Bachelor degree and to establish a Master’s degree in Paediatric Osteopathy.
In 2006 Cristian Ciranna-Raab BSc, DO, an English trained osteopath joined the faculty, as a vice principle of the school, who became took over the direction of the school in 2007.
In 2009 the school managed to get validated from a German University. This was a very important step for German osteopathy, as OSD was the first school in Germany to receive a state recognition, and the first in Europe to offer a Masters degree in osteopathy on a part time basis in 5 years of training.
Today the school offers the part time degree in 6 different cities in Germany, the full time degree, now validated, in Berlin, and has different cooperating schools abroad, which have adopted the OSD academic curriculum (Poland, Italy, Belgium)
OSD is well known for its international faculty, and for being the most active school organizing international events.

Programs of OSD are:

1)Masters degree in Osteopathy Part time (5years)
2)Masters degree in OSteopathy Full time (5years)
3)Master degree (post-graduate) Paediatric Osteoapthy (2 years)
4)Postgraduate Diploma course in Sports Osteopathy (1year
5)Conversion course MSc – Belgium
6)Postgraduate Diploma Paedaitric OSteoapthy – Italy
7)Part time Osteoapthy Diploma course – Poland

Testimonials

Training, a steady value for more than twenty years now, leads physiotherapy and keeps it at a very high level, well done to George Karambalis and his associates, we owe a lot to all of you.

- Philip Tzimoulis -

EPIMORFOSIS organizes specialization seminars for rehabilitation professionals. I’ve watched a lot. I strongly recommend you trust EPIMORFOSIS for your specialization and lifelong information.

- Alexandros Karagiannidis -

EPIMORFOSIS justifies its name by providing high quality courses. George Karampalis operates more like a constant “trainee” and less like an entrepreneur, and this is an additional positive fact in the effort that is put by the workers and teachers of EPIMORFOSIS.

- Dimitris Stamoulis -

I have known George Karampalis and EPIMORFOSIS for many years. I’ve had the opportunity to join several clinical courses and I can argue that, at the level of organisation and selection of trainers, they have a high level of recognised prestige.

- Georgia Petta -

My first steps in professional specialization started with EPIMORFOSIS and continue. It has been with us all these years, covering the need for modern and documented knowledge, in collaboration with internationally acclaimed educational institutions.

- Kostas Poulis -

The best physiotherapists training institution. It enables the development of the necessary knowledge for clinical reasoning. High-quality training without having to travel abroad.

- Tsoukalas Kotsiris Georgios -
